HelioVolt and NREL Team Up on Thin-Film Solar Cells

The Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently announced that it will team up with HelioVolt Corp. to advance the technology for making thin-film Copper Indium Gallium Diselenide (CIGS) solar cells. The HelioVolt process, which involves depositing two thin chemical reactant layers and rapidly heating them to bond CIGS films to sheets of glass or other surfaces.

NREL and HelioVolt are collaborating under a six-month $100,000 Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, for which HelioVolt is supplying $75,000 of its own funds. The goal of the six-month agreement is to produce a prototype of a HelioVolt CIGS photovoltaic cell, from which commercial production could be later established.
